About Sliema

My journey, in full.

From a 21-year-old graduate in Houston to a certified NLP practitioner and Mindset Coach — two decades, two continents, and a lot of restless whispering to get here.

Chapter One

The Journey Begins

When I was 21, fresh out of university in Houston, Texas, I thought I was unstoppable. I was ambitious, fearless, and convinced that I was ready to conquer the world.

But the world doesn't always greet ambition with open arms.

My first few jobs in Houston — in inventory management, retail, and insurance — were nothing like the dream I had in my head. I was searching for my place, testing different roles, hoping to find the thing that would light me up. It wasn't until I moved back to Sri Lanka and joined a large apparel company as a management trainee that I discovered my spark: sales, marketing, and communication.

At first I loved it. But soon the work became repetitive, predictable… and that restless part of me started whispering, there's more you could be doing.

So I did.

I spotted a problem in the company that everyone seemed to accept as "just the way things are." I couldn't help myself — I designed a new process that not only solved it but helped the company hit its highest sales targets ever.

Management adopted my method as the benchmark. I should have felt on top of the world… but when the recognition and rewards didn't follow, that restless inner whisper returned.

Chapter Two

Navigating the Corporate Maze

For the next two decades, I collected skills across diverse industries — chasing growth and refusing to settle.

In advertising — a new job; fast-paced, creative, unpredictable. I thrived. I wrote briefs that brought out the best in designers, campaigns that became iconic for the brands I handled. I loved the work.

Next came telecommunications — polished, professional, structured. Sales was new territory for me, and closing deals was a challenge. But I loved the dynamism and meeting clients. Eventually, I transitioned into marketing, where I could create impactful campaigns and organise large-scale events that people still talked about.

But I hit a road block. Budgets were minimised, campaigns were chopped. What do I do now?

I improvised. I was developing my public speaking skills at the time, and I realized that sharing this knowledge through a staff workshop could really benefit the company. I trusted my gut, and it paid off. The impact was incredible — the workshop turned our staff into confident public speakers and completely catapulted my own journey in leadership.

Then came the education sector, a mid-size company that operated efficiently but had great potential for new ideas and improvements, which I relished. I worked on everything from conception to execution of product launches, to press releases, to social media campaigns, to working with influencers for the brand. And somewhere along the way, I made another dream come true — I became a writer.

A dream to start my own business was in the back of my head for many years, and it was only during the pandemic that I discovered what I wanted to do. So while working full time in my job, in the middle of the thick pandemic, I founded my own company — an online Sri Lankan treats boutique that makes delicious traditional sweets, delicately wrapped to gift family and friends for all special occasions.
